TRAUMA SENSITIVE
SOMATIC MOVEMENT CLASSES
Somatic therapy, rooted in the Greek concept of 'soma'—the living body known from within—integrates mind and body through experiential practices. In therapeutic group settings, somatic therapy becomes a powerful tool for healing trauma and fostering well-being.
In these group sessions, you'll find a collective space where you can safely explore and reconnect with your body. Trauma often disrupts our sense of safety and embodiment, leading to fragmented experiences.
Through somatic techniques practiced in a group setting, you will be guided to:
-
Rediscover your body as a place of safety and resilience, cultivating a deeper connection to bodily sensations and inner experiences.
-
Process and integrate unexpressed emotions and bodily memories within a supportive community.
-
Complete unresolved stress responses in a regulated and compassionate environment.
-
Develop skills in self-regulation and co-regulation, learning to navigate emotions and interactions with others more effectively.
Within the group dynamic, somatic therapy encourages you to build trust, empathy, and mutual support. You will learn to attune to your own physiological responses and those of others, fostering a shared journey of healing. Techniques such as mindful movement, breathwork, guided imagery, and somatic experiencing are used to facilitate healing at both individual and collective levels.
By engaging in somatic therapy within a group context, you'll not only benefit from personal healing but also contribute to a shared process of resilience-building and emotional regulation. This approach honors your individual journey while highlighting the healing potential of community support and shared embodied practices.
UPCOMING CLASSES
WHAT TO EXPECT IN CLASS...
When you join a session, you can expect a warm, welcoming, and safe environment where your healing journey is supported at every step. Here’s what you can look forward to:
1. Arriving and Grounding: We'll start with grounding exercises to help you settle into the space and connect with your body. These might include simple breathing techniques or mindfulness practices designed to bring your awareness to the present moment.
2. Setting Intentions: We’ll take a moment to set personal intentions for the session. This is a time for you to reflect on what you hope to gain or explore during our time together.
3. Guided Somatic Practices: The core of the session involves guided somatic practices, including mindful movement rooted in the eastern philosophies of Yoga, QiGong, and TaiQi, as well as leading-edge stress and trauma release techniques like Dance/ Movement Therapy, Somatic Stress Release™, Body-Mind Centering® and Feldenkrais®. Some of these movements and shapes may be familiar, while others may be new. The purpose of this movement practice is not to do a 'workout', instead the focus is to attune to your body's sensations, emotions, and memories, allowing you to process and release trauma in a safe and supportive way.
4. Group Sharing and Reflection: There will be opportunities to share your experiences with the group, if you feel comfortable. This sharing can foster a sense of connection and mutual support, as you realise that others are on similar journeys. Listening to others can also provide valuable insights and perspectives.
5. Co-Regulation Exercises: We’ll engage in exercises designed to build co-regulation skills. These activities help you learn how to regulate your own physiological and emotional states in connection with others, fostering trust and empathy within the group.
6. Integration and Closing: Towards the end of the session, we’ll focus on integrating the experiences and insights gained. This might involve gentle movement, relaxation exercises, or creative expression. We’ll close with a brief reflection on the session, reinforcing any sense of safety and resilience you’ve cultivated.
7. Aftercare and Support: You’ll receive suggestions for aftercare to help you continue the healing process between sessions. This might include simple practices you can do at home, journaling prompts, or other self-care tips.
By participating in these group sessions, you’ll experience a unique blend of individual and collective healing, supported by somatic techniques and the shared strength of the community.
Each session is designed to help you reconnect with your body, process trauma, and build resilience, all within a compassionate and supportive group setting.
